Digital technology improves urban livelihood.

“The Macau smart street lighting is a major infrastructure project by the Macau Special Administrative Region Government and the Companhia de Electricidade de Macau – CEM, S.A. It aims to replace the city’s primitive on-off road illumination with an automated IoT-platform-based solution. OSRAM Traxon e:cue, as supplier of the project, offered an integrated solution consisting of product, system and service, elevating Macau into a smart city in real sense,” – Charles Han, China Sales Head, Traxon e:cue, OSRAM

Smart street lighting is the key to smart city

Macau’s original street lighting was becoming obsolete: many of the control cabinets were decades-old and the lighting poles were traditional sodium lamps. 450 control cabinets, spreading across town, varied in year of manufacture, size, specification, control protocol and inner structure, which caused a lot of inconvenience for asset management.

To address the issue, the project team initiated multiple site investigations across Macau. Based on the actual conditions, OSRAM Traxon e:cue provided customization of lighting products, power and control devices to ensure the portfolio meet local operational and technical requirements. A control platform was also incorporated for higher automation.

Macau’s brand-new smart street lighting system in general networks 8,500 pcs OSRAM LED streetlights, 500 sets of OSRAM CDIP cabinets, 100 sets of OSRAM IMC cabinets, one OSRAM smart street lighting central management platform and an array of related network devices.

8,500 pcs 4000K OSRAM Simplitz® Street Light are installed all over the city to replace the obsolete sodium lamps. The Simplitz® Street Light, embedded with dimming function and controllability, is compatible with various smart city applications and systems. With high efficacy, low maintenance and excellent optic performance, it is a significant improvement for energy saving and pollution reduction.

To ensure reliability, the CDIP cabinets are manufactured from stainless-steel-and-high-polymer hybrid material, and the IMC cabinets, made from high-strength polymer material. All cabinets come with a ventilation design to cope with Macau’s heat and humidity and are rated at IP55 and IK10 to withstand the city’s coastal climate and typhoon seasons.

Smart city management enhances urban livelihood

Our smart street lighting central management platform establishes a framework where the CDIP and IMC cabinets serve as the frontend and communicate through the internet with the backend. Overall the platform provides functionalities such as lighting system monitoring, sensor and IoT devices monitoring, messenger, SMS and Email etc.

The CDIP cabinets adopt the OSARM ACS Street Lighting Control System (including the PCU, MCU, CCU and ECU modules) to manage the entire street lighting system and collect data; lighting sensors, the magnetic door switch and the water immersion sensor have also been added for better data acquisition.

The IMC cabinets, installed at the city’s key locations and major roads, use the same ACS control system plus lighting sensor to collect information such as illuminance, ambient brightness and other data for the central platform to make informed and automated decisions.

Our smart street lighting central management platform enables city decision-makers to view the street lighting status in real time at a glance, which greatly facilitates management and reduces operating cost. With the functionalities of data collection and messenger, the decision-makers are provided not only valuable information such as traffic and weather etc., but also an effective channel to communicate with citizens, which allows for more timely and attentive municipal services.

“OSRAM Traxon e:cue is committed to becoming a leading integrated solution provider in the field of intelligence. It is our aim to provide product, technology and service for smart city management, and to enable IoT applications with our capabilities,” Charles Han concluded, adding: “The Macau smart street lighting project marks a milestone on OSRAM Traxon e:cue’s path towards smart city. We have overcome the challenges of standard difference, specification discrepancy, a pressing deadline, the corona crisis and a typhoon attack. The entire process, I believe, will be a valuable lesson for our future project undertaking.”
